Makena Landing was the busiest settlement on Maui during the 19th century. Big Beach, also known as Oneloa Beach, together with the adjacent Little Beach became two of South Maui's most important tourist attractions. The unusual rugged shoreline and the endless lava fields make for most of the areas unspoiled beauty. The single road is in close proximity to the blue Pacific Ocean and is a scenic route. It is easy to spot the Makena condos when slowly driving south along the coast.

The Makena Resort with over 1,800 acres is a separate new development that has yet to be defined. At the beginning of 2009, the Maui County granted approval for the build out of 800 Makena condos or homes over a time period of 15 to 20 years. Makena Resort will encompass extravagance while maintaining the essential feel of island living. This part of the South Maui shoreline is expected to develop into a world-class travel destination while preserving the essence of old Hawaii.
